Scenario

San Andreas

The building is standing. That is not the same as safe.

The first one lasted ninety seconds and rearranged the city. The aftershocks are what finish the buildings that survived it, on no schedule anyone can predict, for weeks.

What kills you

Structures, gas, and the next one.

Rules

  1. 01Gas off before anything else.
  2. 02Shoes on, always, including in bed.
  3. 03Do not re-enter a building to fetch something.
  4. 04Doorways are a myth. Under furniture is real.

The kit

5 items

Most post-quake deaths are fires, and this is a four-second job that prevents them.

Tools

Gas Shutoff Wrench

A dedicated key for the gas meter valve, kept at the meter rather than in a drawer.

The floor is glass now. Keep them tied, under the bed.

Shelter

Bedside Emergency Shoes

Sturdy shoes kept where you sleep, for broken glass in the dark.

Everything you will move for a week has an edge on it.

Audible through rubble in a way a human voice is not.

Light & comms

Emergency Air Horn

Compressed gas, far louder than a whistle, audible over engines and wind. Finite number of blasts.

Mains water is gone or contaminated for weeks, not days.

Water & food

Collapsible Water Jug

Rigid enough to pour, soft enough to pack flat. Look at the tap; it is where these leak.
