BRIDGE — LOSTASH LOADING — 12 CM/HTOWNACID pH 2.8 — AIR FILTER MANDATORYFIG. 42EGRESS — SINGLE ROUTE

Scenario

Dante's Peak

The mountain has been quiet for seven thousand years.

The signs were there for a fortnight and the town council did not want to alarm the tourists. Now the ash is falling, the water is acid, and the road out crosses a bridge nobody has inspected since the tremors began.

What kills you

Ash, acid, and the one road out.

Rules

  1. 01Ash is glass. Do not breathe it or drive through it.
  2. 02The water is acidic long before it looks wrong.
  3. 03Roofs collapse under ash. Clear them or leave.
  4. 04Leave on the first warning, not the second.

The kit

5 items

Volcanic ash is powdered glass and it does not leave the lungs.

Medical

P100 Respirator Kit

The highest particulate rating in the North American scheme. Filters near-everything solid, nothing gaseous.

The same glass, in your eyes, with no way to rinse it out safely.

Medical

Sealed Goggles

A full seal against airborne particles and splash. Check it works over your glasses if you wear them.

Wet ash weighs more than snow and takes roofs down in hours.

Tools

Roof Rake

Pulls snow load off a roof from the ground, before the weight becomes structural.

Acidified water looks exactly like water.

Water & food

pH Test Strips

Tells you something about water or soil in seconds. Not a purity test — it measures acidity, nothing more.

Ash kills an engine in miles, not hours, and the road out is long.

Tools

Cabin Air Filter Spare

A vehicle's cabin filter, which is the only thing between outside air and the inside of the car.
